Film:
Toni en famille (Toni in English) is a 2023
endearing French comedy, mostly shot in the gorgeous (northern) Drôme for the most part.
Synopsis:
Twenty years ago, Toni (Camille Cottin, star of Call My Agent) was on the verge of pop stardom with a chart-topping single.
Though she still performs at local bars to support her family, Toni’s dreams of fame have long since faded with the obligations of
parenthood. Now, at 43, her life revolves around raising her five teenage children as a single parent, itself a full-time job. But as her
two eldest children prepare to leave for university, Toni’s familiar domestic routines are suddenly called into question. After years of
putting her family first, what would it mean to pursue her own future? Grounded by Camille Cottin’s quietly moving performance, director
Nathan Ambrosioni’s sophomore feature, TONI, is a richly observed character study of life in transition.
Frédérique's pick! Why?
"A mother, five teenagers, an apartment that’s far too small, and a constant background noise. We all know the picture. Everyday life
is loud, the household chores are overwhelming, and Toni is always on the edge, somewhere between energy and exhaustion. At 42, she’s
looking for a new path that might give her life meaning after the children…
The situations and dialogue feel realistic. The teens are incredibly true to life — they really talk like teenagers. The everyday scenes
have that slightly chaotic, warm texture we recognize without being able to explain why.
The daily moments are lively, portrayed with humor and tenderness.
In this film, written and directed by a very young filmmaker (Nathan Ambrosioni, who was 24 when he wrote it), what stands out is a sincere,
heartfelt enthusiasm.
A genuinely enjoyable moment of cinema."
